David Nelson:
Making Whatcom County
safer and more just for all.
What is District Court,
and why does it matter?
Whatcom County District Court handles Misdemeanors, Small Claims, Infractions, No Contact Orders and Civil cases (like landlord tenant cases). District Court has not changed much for 30 years, which means that many of the court's systems could be improved and modernized to serve the needs of our community today. Most citizens of Whatcom County will only ever encounter the legal system through District Court. District Court is a court of “limited jurisdiction”.
What could be improved in District Court?
David will make sensible improvements as Judge, such as implementing an electronic filing system to allow easier access to the legal system by county citizens. David will also make District Court a leader in alternative jail options, providing our communities with better access to mental health and rehabilitation services.
We need someone with experience and expertise to lead important initiatives for the court, for the people of Whatcom County.
What will David do as Judge in District Court?
David will modernize the court and follow the law to create accountability for offenders. He
recognizes that judges are not legislators. The rule of law is the guiding force in how a judge
should act. David is unbiased and fair in his approach to sitting as a judge. Every person who appears in his court would be heard and treated with respect.
What could be improved in District Court?
David grew up in Whatcom County (Ferndale). He understands the values of our local community. He has worked both as a prosecutor and as a defense attorney for over 35 years. He has experience as a judge--- sitting as a pro tem in all the courts of Whatcom County. He has handled cases as diverse as shoplifting to murder.
Both his experience and his lifelong love for this community gives him unique perspective as a candidate for District Court Judge. If elected, David would be a judge who listens, a judge who understands, and a judge who is fair and community minded. A judge not beholden to any political ideology.
